Nursery

Hello and a very warm welcome from the Nursery team! Please use this page of our website to find key information about your child starting their learning journey in Nursery here at Crumpsall Lane. If you have any questions or queries, then please speak to one of the team or contact the school office.
Picture

At Crumpsall Lane, we want every child to reach their potential and for many this begins in our nursery provision.  For many of your children, this is the start of their education so we aim to foster their independence and celebrate innovation and creativity by providing a child-initiated curriculum that is based on the framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Throughout the year, the nursery children play, make friends, develop and learn.  They have great fun, exploring and creating, indoors and outdoors.  They gain independence and confidence and their natural curiosity is encouraged.

This page will contain all the information you will need to help prepare your child for nursery and help us in promoting their independence.

Uniform

A clean uniform should be worn by each child when they come to school.  The uniform in Nursery is a navy blue jumper or cardigan, white polo T-shirt, a pair of leggings or jogging bottoms.  Also, you will need to provide a spare set of clothes in a carrier bag.  It is important that you label every item of your child’s clothing; if items are taken off they are easily mistaken for somebody else’s clothes.
You will need to ensure your child has a suitable outdoor coat   and    a pair of wellington boots so that they are suitably dressed for the outdoors.  We will not compromise on allowing children to play outdoors as we believe it to be an essential component of young children’s learning and development.
Children must be allowed to experience the world around them in a full, messy, muddy, wet environment if they are to make useful meaning of it.
Getting wet does not cause us to catch a cold. If the cold virus is around, we will pick it up regardless of whether we are wet or dry.

School Lunches

School lunches   must    be healthy.  You are able to provide your child with a healthy packed lunch; please see the section on school lunches for recommended foods and foods to avoid.
If your child is having a school lunch, they will be offered a choice from our healthy menu.  School lunches for nursery children are free for those receiving certain benefits. For more information about this, please contact the school office by telephone.

Transition and Preparing your Child for Nursery

We are going to support your child and yourselves over the transition period.  At Crumpsall Lane our staff are skilled in settling your child in to the school.  To do this successfully we would like your support.
Things to do before your child starts school
  • Have conversations with your child as often as possible. This may seem obvious but it is the most valuable thing you can do.
  • Read to your child every day if possible.
  • Look at this webpage and familiarise your child with members of the Nursery team.
  • Enjoy sharing stories, songs and rhymes with your child, both in English and your home language.
  • Talk about their interests and things they enjoy.
  • Encourage your child to look for numbers and words in their local environment e.g. door numbers, bus numbers, shop names and food labels.
  • If you would like to bring in any creative models, paintings or drawings, we would be happy to display them in the classroom to celebrate your child’s achievements.
  • Encourage your child to be independent when putting on their coats and shoes and when going to the toilet.

When your child begins Nursery they will be invited in for a short stay and play without a parent or carer.  Over time the amount of time at Nursery will increase.  In order for your child to be full time at Nursery they will need to
1. Separate from carer easily.
2. Move independently around the playground and class (both indoor and outdoor areas).
3. Stay awake and energetic throughout the session.
 4. Cope with changes of adults in the classroom without distress.
 5. Stay within set boundaries of the playground and class (both indoor and outdoor areas).
 6. Behave appropriately (and non-aggressively) for the majority of time.
 7. Manage their own personal hygiene. This area can be supported for children with significant developmental delay.

Tip Sheets to help at home

If you feel you and your child need more help or support with any of these areas there are some booklets that you can download.  It is important that we are all working together to make sure your child is happy and achieves at Crumpsall Lane Primary School.

Nursery Core Texts

This is our core key texts list for Nursery. We have chosen these books as they are a mix of fact and fiction, offer a range of different themes, cultures and are language-rich to help our children develop their sentence structure and vocabulary.

We really value and promote reading and storytelling throughout the whole of the EYFS. Please find a video of Nursery acting out their version of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
