Crumpsall Lane Primary uses a maths programme called Big Maths.
This begins EYFS with Little Big Maths. Little Big Maths ensures there is a press on progression within the context of the child’s play, self-discovery and personal learning journey. This framework is known as A-CLIC (Amounts – Counting, Learn Its, It’s Nothing New and Calculation) and is characterised by accurate steps of progression (known as Progress Drives) that make new learning easy and obvious to children. It provides a seamless transition into the Big Maths programme. In year one the children move on to the Big Maths Programme. This follows a daily programme called CLIC (Counting, Learn Its, It’s Nothing New and Calculating) and ensures that every child becomes more numerate.
Big Maths enables teachers to: – Know what each child can do. – Use this knowledge to ensure your child receives the next step of learning. – Constantly assess whether your child is ready to move on. Big Maths includes a variety of characters to make maths more fun and child friendly. These characters live on Planet CLIC and all work together to make maths make sense.
Learn Its During the year, the children focus on particular Learn Its or number facts each term. This ensures that as your child moves throughout the school, they are becoming more numerate. Ask your child’s teacher to find out which Learn Its they are focussing on at the moment. Here is a link for the Learn Its Schedule that your child will learn each term. Please support and help them by making sure they know these facts really quickly.
Switchers The children need to know the ‘switcher’ for each fact. For example, if they are learning 3 + 4 = 7 they also need to know the switcher, 4 + 3 = 7. Fact Families Children also need to know the fact families for each Learn It; these are associated subtraction or division facts. For example, when learning 3 + 4 = 7, they also need to know that 4 + 3 = 7, 7 – 3 = 4 and 7 – 4 = 3 Every Friday the children will take the Big Maths Beat that Challenge to try to improve their score.
