Tuesday's English

31/3/2020

In today's English let's take a look at one of the most famous poems in the English language - "The Tyger" by William Blake.   Yes, the spelling is strange, and that is addressed in one of the comprehension questions.
I'd like you to read the poem and clarify the meaning of any new vocabulary.
Then answer the comprehension questions in full sentences.
Here is a link to  "The Tyger" on "The Poetry Foundation" website.
You can read the poem, and hear it read out loud by clicking the "play" icon.
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43687/the-tyger

Here are the comprehension questions:
1. What do you think this poem is about?
2. Explain what you think the poet meant when he described the animal as ‘burning bright’.
3. When and where might this animal be found?
4. Write down five examples of alliteration from the poem.
5. In verse 4, Blake is suggesting that such a powerful animal must have been created by…
 (a) a sculptor
(b) a painter
(c) a blacksmith
(d) a carpenter
Pick one option and explain why.
 6.   Is this a modern poem? Explain your answer.
7. Who is ‘he’ in verse 5?
8. Why do you think the poet spelt “Tiger” as “Tyger” in this poem?

Terrific Tuesday!

Good morning children!
What writing technique have I used for the heading of this blog post 'Terrific Tuesday'?    Write your answer in the comments box below.

To start, I want to share an inspiring thought of the day from Dr Seuss:

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

These are the learning activities we want you to complete today in addition to english and maths:

1. The  Joe Wicks’ work out  which will be shown on his you tube channel.  The work out starts at 9am and lasts for 30 minutes.  Click on this link to take part in his work out:https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1

2. From 9.30 – 10.00 am, we want you to practice your spellings.  The spelling lists were uploaded on a blog post dated 20/3/20.  We suggest that you practise ten spellings each day (start on step 5a).  Remember to use the ‘Look, say, cover, write, check’ method to remember the spellings.   In addition, practise writing sentences including the words that you have learnt.

3. From 10.00 – 10.15 am, Dr Chipindall will doing ‘live’ teaching of computing, science or engineering.  Go to the following blog page to take part in this learning:https://drchips.weebly.com/

4. Straight after lunch, we want you to do some   reading    for half an hour.  Read your book or online text to an experienced reader (this could be your mum, dad, carer, brother, sister or any other relative).  While you are reading, ask the person who is listening to you read to ask you questions about the book/text.  We uploaded reading questions in a blog post on Monday 23/3/20.  If you have any questions about the learning activities then please email your teacher at:

Internet safety and advice about how to submit work

30/3/2020

Hello  year 5 children,

When you are adding a comment to  this blog, make sure you are only using your  first name only.  Do not use your first name and surname together.    We won't be able to publish your comments if you use  your first  name and surname (this also includes any initials) together.   This is so you keep your identity private and safe.

I was unable to post the  comments from both  the Muhammads in 5C because they both included their surname initials.

A couple of children have been asking how they are meant to send work  in.     I suggest you take a photo of any work you do and then attach the photo to an e-mail. Send any work to: y5c@crumpsall.manchester.sch.uk  (Mr Tait's class) or  y5l@crumpsall.manchester.sch.uk (Mr Ahmed-Swift's class) .   Or   you can type your work up in Microsoft word and then attach the document to an e-mail.  As mentioned before, just send the document to the e-mail address above.

With the daily White Rose maths activities, I suggest you print off any worksheets you have to do and then write the answers on the sheets you print off.  If you don't have a printer, then I suggest you read the questions from your screen and write  any working out and answers you have on  any pieces of paper you have at home.

I hope this is clear!

Your challenge today is to read the examples of "sentence types" attached and then write your  own sentences based on the examples. For example, can you write your own "2A" sentence?
Using different types of sentence will make your writing more interesting!
http://www.kelsall.cheshire.sch.uk/serve_file/94451

Superstar  challenge: can you invent your own sentence type, and explain to a sibling or parent what the features of your sentence are?

Don't forget, if you are proud of your work, e-mail it in and we'll share some examples on the blog :)
