Year 4 Local History Walk

3/5/2019

On Wednesday 23rd April the children went on a local History walk for our Topic 'Victorians'. Did you know that North Manchester General Hospital used to be home to a large workhouse which housed 1,600 poor people. We walked down to the hospital and had a look at the different buildings. We had to guess which we thought were the modern buildings and the Victorian buildings. As a class we had a discussion and had to support our ideas with evidence such as old brick work, different style windows and the different roof types. One of the buildings had a script wrote at the top which said ‘Poor and needy the lord careth for me’. It was very interesting to see the differences between the two buildings and find out that an old Victorian workhouse use to be down the road from our school!
