L.O. I can plan a story .

For todays task you are going to plan a story using a simple story mountain.

Picture

Think about the story of Stone Age Boy.

What happens at the beginning of the story?

Beginning-  Stone Age Boy was walking in the woods. He tripped and found himself falling down. Stone Age Boy woke up in a cave, in a place that was unfamiliar. He was lost.

What happens in the middle of the story?

Middle- Stone Age boy stumbled across a girl called Om. Om introduced Stone Age boy to her family and showed him life during the Stone Age.  Om introduced Stone Age Boy to the cave, revisiting the cave paintings.   Stone Age Boy saw something  moving in the  darkness. It was a big, furious  bear. The ground gave way  and Stone Age Boy found himself falling down.

What happens at the end of the story?

End-Stone Age Boy woke up  in the cave and couldn't find Om anywhere. He stumbled back home to his parents  who  thought he had dreamt  everything.   Stone Age Boy never forgot his experience and grew up to be an archeologist.  Was it a dream? Maybe, maybe not.

Now can you  write your own story plan thinking about what it would be like for Om if she came to visit Crumpsall Lane Primary school?

What would  Om see?
How is it strange and different to what she is used to?
Imagine her stepping out of the cave and into the playground. What is there?
Houses rather than forests, sound of cars, planes in the air, etc...

What happens in the beginning  of your story?
Om woke up in school. Om  was lost, she did not know where she was. She walked around and bumped into a boy. His name was Stone Age boy.

What happens in the middle of your story?
Stone Age boy showed Om around the school and introduced him to his class. The class taught Om all about life in the modern world.  The showed her their books and electronics. Om was amazed!

What happens at the end of your story?
Om  went back home to her Stone Age family to tell them all about what she had learnt.

Model example:
...and I found myself falling down, down, down...
I woke up  in  strange looking   cave, which didn't look  like a cave at all! There was colourful  images all over the walls, all different shapes and sizes.  These images  were surrounded by a language which I couldn't understand.  I stood up and walked around, curiously investigating   all the  fascinating objects around the room. Then suddenly I bumped into a short, young boy with big round glasses.    The boy introduced himself as Stone Age Boy,  he kindly welcomed me to "Crumpsall Lane Primary School".   He  took me around this   humongous cave which he called a "building". This building had many rooms, and there were other children running all around me, heading to different rooms to learn with their teachers.   This was all so new and exciting!  I wonder which class I  could join in with?

Your turn!

Now can you  write your story .
The story of Om  visiting Crumpsall Lane Primary school.

Remember to write clear sentences using capital letters and full stops.

Writing  Targets:

Group 1 - ELG12 - I can write simple sentences that other people can read.

L.O. Can I collate ideas for a story?

Lets read the beginning of the story and summarise it.
The story is about a boy from modern England, going to Stone Age Britain.

How can we write our own version?

What would happen if Om came to Crumpsall lane?

'and I found myself falling down, down, down...'

What would  Om see?
How is it strange and different to what she is used to?
Imagine her stepping out of the cave and into the playground. What is there?
Houses rather than forests, sound of cars, planes in the air, etc...

How would each moment of the story be different?

Activity
Pick an activity that the Stone Age people in the book do.
How do we do it differently now?
What would we do instead?

Example:  During the Stone Age they cooked over a fire. Today we cook our food using a stove or oven.

Write a couple of sentences in the style of the Stone Age Boy. What would you want to show Om? Think about electronics, cooking, how to find food etc...
What would be the special thing you would want to show her instead of the cave paintings? What means a lot to you?
Example :   books, games, cars...

Answer the questions below.  They are linked to the work we have been doing on 'Bills New Frock' by Anne Fine.

1. What would Bill sound like when saying these words?

'I don't want to be tripped up in one of their nasty scuffles, like last week when all the scabs were kicked off my ankle'.
2. What does this tell you about the other boys?

'Bill Simpson blushed so pink that all his freckles disappeared. He felt so foolish he forgot to turn off at the next corner to go round the long way.'
3. Write the word/phrase that show Bill was embarrassed.

Vocabulary
1. What does  the word 'swept' mean?
2. What does the word 'dismay' mean?
3.  What does the word 'hauling' mean?

Use the dictionary to check  this:   https://www.collinsdictionary.com/

2. Why were his mum and dad in a rush?
3. What pet does Bill own?

L.O. Can I understand the similarities between online and in-person communication?

Q. What are some examples of how to be clear and respectful to others when you are talking in school?

Some ideas...
  • Try to talk clearly  and explain  what you mean if someone doesn't understand
  • Listen to what other people have to say
  • Take turns talking
  • Speak instead of shouting
  • Don't make fun of people
  • Say 'please' and 'thank you'
  • Say nice things to people
Watch the video below:
https://www.commonsense.org/education/tlr-ui/modal-collection-video/2496916

What happened in the video?

What are the differences between the four messages in the picture below?  If you got each of these from a friend, what would you think?
Picture
People are increasingly  connecting virtually, through texts and emails rather than in person - we're even having to do our learning virtually!  That's why tone is so important when it comes to sending typed messages.

There are some rules you can follow to make sure you are being clear and polite when you send messages electronically.

What changes did you make?

Any of these below?
  • Edit the first two sentences  for proper use of uppercase letters
  • Correct the spelling of "u" and "rite"
  • Rewrite the last sentence to make it more polite
  • Add another sentence to conclude the email
  • Change the ending "Guess Who" to "Max"

What should you do if someone contacts you online that you don't know?

What should you do if a friend sends you something mean or upsetting online?

L.O. Can I  understand what makes a happy home?

We are going to be exploring our home life and  what makes for a happy home.

I (Miss Curzon) live at home with my baby daughter.    She makes me happy because she is always smiling and laughing and she helps cheer me up when I am having a bad day!  She makes me laugh a lot too with her funny personality.  She also makes me proud when she learns something new.

Lots of us will have different people who live in our homes and it might not be the same as our classmates but that's part of what makes us special and unique.

Task 1
Complete the 'Happy Home' activity.    You need to write words that make a happy home.  For example, label all the things you need to survive and be happy at home (food, drink, bed, warmth, care, love, be looked after, clothes).    Every child has the right to all of these things and it's not the materialistic things like toys and devices that are important.

Task 2
Answer the questions below.
1. Why are people in our homes important and what do they do for us?
2. What would happen if they stopped doing those things?
3. How would you feel?

Reflection
It is important that we appreciate who we have at home, are kind to people at home and respect people at home just like we do in school with our friends.
